Crazy times in the ATL

Taken from "The Blotter" in the Atlanta Creative Loafing paper:

THE OWNER OF A CHINESE RESTAURANT
on Peachtree Street said a woman called to complain that she found a hair in her food, so she wanted some free food. The woman said she had ordered the pepper steak. The restaurant owner checked the order file; there was no order of a pepper steak dinner. The owner called the woman back and told her that there was no record of anyone ordering the pepper steak dinner that night. Yelling and screaming, the woman kept demanding free food. She said her husband works for a law firm, and she works for the CDC, and her sister works for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution - and they would all do things to hurt the owner. The woman was calling every two or three minutes.

Match.com for Sri Lankans

(Lankalink.net)

I know I shouldn't laugh....I really shouldn't..... but come on! I'm crying as we speak (from either laughter or depression-- I'm not sure which) after reading this website. This ladies and gentleman is what we Sri Lankan girls have to work with if we want to find a partner that falls within the "acceptable" range that our parents will agree to without lots of tears and threats to ship us back to the mother country. Who knows though, maybe when I turn 24 in March, I just may e-mail "S.C."-- a "fair handsome Christian" getting a post-doc in Bio-Chemistry (and for those of you that don't know, fair doesn't refer to his personality, it refers to the brownness of his skin)-- this may just be the match I'm looking for....

Don't forget to check out the bride ads. Those are even better!

Willy Wonka's taking over the world...

... or at least the United States... Part of the original purpose of this blog was to educate people on the details of Daylight Savings, so in keeping with that theme, I'm not sure how many people are aware of some legislation that was passed during the Summer. The House and the Senate negotiated a deal that would change Daylight Savings as we now know it:

House and Senate negotiators on an energy bill agreed to begin daylight-saving time three weeks earlier, on the second Sunday in March, and extend it by one week to the first Sunday in November. (Article)

One of the main reasons for the change is that the candy companies were adovacating that Halloween be included in Daylight Savings so kids would be able to have more quality trick-or-treating time. They've been advocating this for years and Geroge W. is the one that's finally looking out for our kids. Not only can we potentially save oil with this bill because of less energy being used, but dentists are also gonna make a mint on all the extra cavities!

Pros and Cons of the Change in Daylight Saving Time in 2007

  • Pros:
  • Energy use will be curtailed.
  • Halloween trick or treaters will get more daylight.
  • Longer "synthetic sunshine".
  • Cons:
  • Daylight Saving Time may reek havoc on computers and electronics. Microsoft plans an upgrade for their operating systems but items such as DVD players and VCRs are programmed for the old dates and are not able to be upgraded.
  • Other countries (Canada specifically) feel compelled to change also because their economy is so integrated with the U.S.
  • Airlines are opposed to the changes because of scheduling International flights.
  • Farmers are opposed because of the impact on livestock

In honor of JT's last year of medical school

"He still hasn't got the hang of it"

Now if only they had a cartoon of a med student doing his first pelvic exam...that's one story he's never gonna live down...

A Movie Review

I saw A History of Violence with Sam on Thursday night and for some reason I can't seem to stop thinking about it. Part of the reason is because of the drunk couple sitting behind us who were talking like they were at a baseball game (which WE should have been at if the Braves had won, but I promise I won't get started on that again....) and Sam swore he could he could hear the guy breathing when he wasn't talking out loud. So we made a bold move to seats at the back of the theater for a more peaceful viewing experience only to have someone start kicking the back of my chair... The plot is taken from a graphic novel, but at times you forget that it is, unlike the black and white filming from Sin City or the surreal stuff in Constantine. The violence was overwhelming at times and I am seriously worried about the fact that I enjoyed this movie. Viggo Mortensen was intense and believable and the casting of William Hurt as his brother was a great move. Definitly worth checking out, but don't take the kids cause I think there were things in it that even I shouldn't have been watching... The question for those of you who see it is, do you think Eddi passes him the peas? Feel free to leave a comment, but try not to give anything away for those who haven't seen it yet!

Traffic Court Etiquette

So for those of you following along in the mini-drama that is my life, today was my traffic court date- 85mph in a 70mph zone, probably not the best idea, but not the end of the world really. The ticket was $128, and the cop told me that if I went to my courtdate, I would only have to pay $79. I wanted to ask why $79 and not $80, but then I realized that I just didn't care.

So I get there today, a tad overdressed for the occasion of standing in line amongst frequent speed offenders in jeans and ripped shirts, only to find that my "court appearance" consists of me standing in line and paying the court clerk. When I get to the window, the clerk mumbles through the window "Do you want any help with the ticket?" So I'm thinking, help with what? Help with reading it? Help with understanding my rights? So I feel the anxiety starting to creep up on me. I know that I'm being judged by the frequent speeder camped out next to the door who has been smirking at all the other "dumb" questions and for some reason I really wanted seem smart and fit in. The lady behind me was kind enough to inform me that the clerk was speaking code for "Do you want me to lower your ticket." Well yeah I want you to lower my ticket! You think I drove to the middle of Aiken, South Carolina in order to pay the full amount when I could have just mailed it in?!?!

So the question is, had I not figured out the code, would the clerk have gone ahead and charged me $128 if I had said no to her help? Who knows....but let me say, the next time your speeding gets you a ticket in Aiken, give me a call cause I know how it's done down there...

Another Braves year bites the dust...

So if you're not sure who these two people are, let me enlighten you. On the left is Jeff Francoeur-- potential Rookie of the Year, and on the right is Andruw Jones-- potential MVP of the Year. So why is it with these two guys and our boy John Smoltz that once again we couldn't make it out of the division series? I mean I'm proud of us winning the division 15 straight years, but at a certain point we need to be able to keep it going in the post-season. It has now been 10 years since we won the World Series. Even Tim Hudson was able to pull it together and pitch a great first half to make up for his miserable opening game performance last week. We have fans in more states than any other teams, an amazing stadium, the best big screen in the entire league, new red Sunday home game jerseys....what the hell else do we need to be doing for them?!?! Maybe getting rid of Farnsworth would be a good start for giving away 5 runs after the 8th inning when we were coasting towards a win... I just spent 6 hours watching the longest game in postseason history (18 innings) and as far as I'm concerned baseball is done for the year.

Ashlee Simpson-- Back on SNL!!

So I say kudos to this girl for facing her shame head-on! Ashlee Simpson is returning to SNL tomorrow night (which incidentally is being hosted by Napoleon Dynamite for all you fans of that lame as hell movie). SNL has been dragging this year, especially in the absence of Tiny Fay on maternity leave. So even though this is a shamelss publicity stunt for both Ashlee and SNL, I intend to tune in and support my girl Jessica's sister. I also find it ironic that less than a year later, Jude Law faced public shame for doing it with his nanny. These two are quite the pair....I think it would have been more fitting if he had hosted tomorrow's show.

So if I meet a gamer geek, this could potentially be a good first date for us

So there is a concert tour going around that involves a full orchestra playing video game music.

" It will be a stellar event, which includes performances of the music, video and specially designed laser and light sequences showcasing over 50 different games in a wide variety of styles. Also included of course, is a special segment focusing on retro arcade classics! "

Frankly, I am speechless

Something worth looking into..

So as the one Republican on this blog, I know that I will be criticized for even hinting at the possibility that I support this idea. Afterall the authors are a Republican congressman and a racist radio host... But this is becoming a hot topic and a lot of people have some very strong opinons about the plan. Do I think that only the wealthy will benefit and that the poor will be negatively affected? No, but at the same time I'm not sure how feasible it will be to implement this plan. Take a look and decide for yourself. Posted by Picasa
