Willy Wonka's taking over the world...

... or at least the United States... Part of the original purpose of this blog was to educate people on the details of Daylight Savings, so in keeping with that theme, I'm not sure how many people are aware of some legislation that was passed during the Summer. The House and the Senate negotiated a deal that would change Daylight Savings as we now know it:
House and Senate negotiators on an energy bill agreed to begin daylight-saving time three weeks earlier, on the second Sunday in March, and extend it by one week to the first Sunday in November. (Article)
One of the main reasons for the change is that the candy companies were adovacating that Halloween be included in Daylight Savings so kids would be able to have more quality trick-or-treating time. They've been advocating this for years and Geroge W. is the one that's finally looking out for our kids. Not only can we potentially save oil with this bill because of less energy being used, but dentists are also gonna make a mint on all the extra cavities!
Pros and Cons of the Change in Daylight Saving Time in 2007
- Pros:
- Energy use will be curtailed.
- Halloween trick or treaters will get more daylight.
- Longer "synthetic sunshine".
- Cons:
- Daylight Saving Time may reek havoc on computers and electronics. Microsoft plans an upgrade for their operating systems but items such as DVD players and VCRs are programmed for the old dates and are not able to be upgraded.
- Other countries (Canada specifically) feel compelled to change also because their economy is so integrated with the U.S.
- Airlines are opposed to the changes because of scheduling International flights.
- Farmers are opposed because of the impact on livestock

I say props to George to STOPPING the wasting of time on this frivolous legislation! First off, we not gonna use more oil, we could only be using less in theory. This debate has been going on for YEARS and it was about time to get it off the table. So whatever...it got passed, no more time will be spent on it by our legislators, we could save money/ or we could use the same amount, kids are happier cause now their parents will let them stay out "later"- it's not that they are scared of the dark.... and personally, I'll take all the sunshine I can get-- what's not to love about this?! :)
